I have a 2001 Audi A4 Avant and the outside temperature sensor reads low sometimes. Why?!

It doesn't happen all the time, but occasionally the temperature reading will go down, even all the way to negative 54 degrees or so! I live in Hawaii, so I can't see as how that could be true.
