Reuss Changes GM's Global Engineering Strategy, Hopes for RWD Chevys, Buicks

Thumbnail There's "nothing irrelevant" about a relatively lightweight, low-cost, fuel-efficient rear-wheel-drive sedan, he says. This is a clear reversal of the attitude GM executives had toward rear-wheel drive before the company's bankruptcy, and potentially, finally, a reversal of GM'...

GM's $1.2-billion Loss: Cause for Optimism?

Thumbnail Henderson says GM's breakeven point now is slightly higher than the 10 million U.S. sales level presented in its reorganization plan, thanks largely to spending more money on marketing its four core brands, Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac.

2009 SEMA: A Few of My Favorite Things

Thumbnail Cherry calls the VSR a "sports rod" because it combines the aesthetic of a traditional hot rod -- albeit it highly stylized -- with the aluminum monocoque chassis construction of a 1970s sports-racing car. The engine is from the previous gen Cadillac CTS-V, and the styling features Cadil...

Payoff for GM as it Posts its First Year-Over-Year Sales Increase Since January

Thumbnail You read in this space last month that General Motors sales took a big hit back in October 2008, following the Lehman Brothers collapse and the launch of the Great Recession. That means comparing year-over-year October sales would make GM look better off after last month's sales. And it's t...

GM Keeps Opel!

Thumbnail It'll take probably a decade to make Chevy a viable Western European brand, and GM has had to pull funding for its Cadillac plans there. Meanwhile, the Eastern European market, especially Russia, has become rather troublesome. Car sales there have plummeted.

American Car Quality Improves, but Asians Still Dominate

Thumbnail Ford is the only domestic automaker with world-class reliability," Paul says. While Fusion/Milan beat Camry/Accord on the number of quality/reliability problems reported, the all-wheel-drive Fusion was rated lower. More on such anomalies later.

Is Toyota Paying the Penalty of Leadership?

Thumbnail The purveyor of the Prius? Really? Isn't that hybrid the car America wanted, even in tough times? Grace is like Cadillac, old Cadillac, which responded with the famous print ad, "The Penalty of Leadership," when Packard attacked the quality of its 1915 V8 Touring.

Look past the edgy lines of the ZDX, th...

True to the Brand? Proliferating Chryslers and Competing with Cadillac

Thumbnail Competing with Lincoln is more plausible, if only because Ford has switched all its cars except the lame-duck Town Car to front-drive-based platforms. Lincoln has been repositioned to between Buick and Cadillac and Ford has made minimal the differences between cars like the Ford Tauru...

10 Coolest Cars: The Palos Verdes Concours d'Elegance

Thumbnail Among my favorites of the bunch was this 1958 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham, which came complete with vanity kits, a bottle of perfume and six magnetic shot glasses in the glove compartment...not amenities cars come with any more for all obvious reasons.  Especially the latter.

Can GM Keep Opel?

Thumbnail I do know that GM needed those euros from the German government months ago. And it has managed to stretch out this German debacle and hang on to the whole thing. Maybe it'll hold on for a few more weeks and outlive Germany's political campaign season. Unless, of course, we hear otherwise from Jo...

August Sales: Will Cash For Clunkers Help Autumn Numbers?

Thumbnail Chevy division outsold Ford division, 168,130 (-9.2 percent) to 161,369 (+21.2 percent). Toyota division remains the number-one U.S. brand/division, at 202,196 (+15.2 percent, and including 10,727 Scions).Pontiac was the only division with a year-over-year increase, up 23.3 percent, to...

The Vuick is Dead - How About a Plug-in Buick Insignia, Instead?

Thumbnail The prospect of a plug-in Cadillac XTS further off in the future is very intriguing. However, the Opel Insignia is pretty close in overall length and weight to the Saturn Vue. So I'm betting that Stephens will name the 2012 Insignia-based midsize Buick as the new model to get the plug-in powe...

GM Sells Saab Just as it Gets it Right - What's Next?

Thumbnail The '11 9-5 (pictured) was designed to take on Audi's A6, really, and therefore probably will ride on the same 111.7-inch wheelbase as the '10 Buick LaCrosse. That leaves the Opel Insignia's 107.8-inch wheelbase for a new 9-3, if indeed the deal allows Koenigsegg to buy more components beyo...

Even This Year, the Anti-Pebble Beach Concours Thrives

Thumbnail Detroit's Three did have a presence at the Dream Cruise. GM gave up its Coney Island restaurant spot on Woodward, but local Buick-GMC-Pontiac dealerships rented it out and filled its parking lot with new and classic models. Chrysler, which counts AMC as part of its heritage, took a large pa...

Opinion: Another V-8 Dies: GM's 4.5L Diesel Made Sense For Cadillac, Too

Thumbnail DETROIT - When General Motors announced last year it was canceling its "Ultra V-8" project, the high-tech engine designed to replace the aged Cadillac Northstar engine, an insider assured me Cadillac would have a V-8 going forth. There's the supercharged 6.2-liter supercharged small b...

Maximum Bob is Retiring, What Will His GM Legacy Be?

Thumbnail So what has Lutz done for GM? You'll find both supporters and detractors throughout Detroit. He's had his share of ups and downs, rushing cars like the Pontiac GTO and Solstice into production, and bringing the Pontiac G8 and nearly launching a rear-drive renaissance outside the Cadilla...

Best of the 2009 North American International Auto Show

Thumbnail Most significant car: Ford Fusion Hybrid. It didn't make its debut here, but it's the car of the future, a mid-size sedan that gets more than 40 mpg. Best redundancy: Lexus HS250h. Presumably, the "H" stands for "hybrid." Doesn't "h" stand for "hybrid," too?

Lutz on Pontiac, Saab and Saturn

Thumbnail Lutz said that Pontiac will focus on a narrow product lineup, albeit one larger in number than Buick, with which it will continue to share a sales channel (and GMC, too). Surviving models will be the G8, Vibe, G5, and Solstice/Solstice coupe, he said. (Surely that's the short-term plan. It el...

Detroit 2009: A Pivotal Moment

Thumbnail This is a remarkable Detroit Show; one that 10 or 20 years from now may be seen as a pivotal moment in the history of the automobile. At Detroit 2009, the electrification of the automotive powertrain moved from being a technological sideshow to the mainstream. For the first time ever, the mos...

It's All in the Timing: Cadillac Converj E-Rev Electric vs. Lexus HS250h Hybrid

Thumbnail DETROIT - Timing was perfect for motoring journalists. First, General Motors wowed us with a concept -- and yes, it's just a concept so far -- of a Cadillac off the Chevrolet Volt's extended-range architecture. Toyota followed, with its production Lexus HS250h (a redundant name), a dedic...
