US expands auto industry bail-out with $6bn for GM's finance arm external link

The new measures come on top of a $17.4bn lifeline handed to GM and Chrysler earlier this month. The former industrial giants were on the brink of collapse that would have caused hundreds of thousands of job losses. Of the total, $13.4bn in short-term loans was earmarked for GM.
